The 22-1 winner that got away!

After a luckless evening with selections last night and dropping three points by the 6:10 which carried our final selection, I was reminded in the 6:40 of an email from a subscriber earlier in the year advising me of how fruitful following up on our selections that became non-runners had been for her.

Although I did make a note to myself to monitor this for myself, the number of non-runners was so infrequent it was gradually forgotten. The reminder came in the form of JAZZY LADY. Put up as a selection for the 'Speed and Class' method on the 5th October before being withdrawn from a Wolverhampton extended mile Nursery.

JAZZY LADY was back in last night over the same conditions. This time, unfortunately the competitive nature of the race put insufficient space between JAZZY LADY and its rivals to be considered. The race was not as competitive in practice as on paper resulting in a most emphatic victory at 22-1.

10 non-runners in 2 races on the All Weather is bizarre

With little to no Class 2 race history at Wolverhampton it is hard to pass judgement on whether the performances on last night's opening 'Championship' races were run to a suitable standard. Of the supporting races on the card the 6:15 Class 5 2yo Maiden was well below standard, the 7:15 Class 6 3yo Handicap was above standard by an equal measure. The 7:45 was slightly below standard but the manner of Alakhan's fascicle victory would lead me to believe that the winner has justified its place in this grade. Fresa's victory was just below my standard all leading me to believe that the track was riding only marginally under standard.

With all the talk and focus being on the 'Championship' races it helped to mask for me the big story and something I find a little dubious. The number of non runners in two of the races. 7:45 saw 5 non-runners along with the 8:45, another 5 non-runners. Having followed the All Weather almost from its concept I find this recent occurrence extremely dubious.

We are all aware of the conditions at Wolverhampton being more testing than usual, this has been documented for months. Therefore the trainers were all aware of what their horses were likely to be faced with at the time of making entries so we will rule out the conditions as a likely cause for the withdraws. I would find it inexplicable for 10 horses in two races to be withdrawn on veterinary advice, therefore suspect that the Bookmaking fraternity are having some part to play in this. I say this, one, because it is so unusual and two, what better way is there to resolve an under-round book. I am sure that many might feel that this maybe fanciful and I would say to you, don't be naive, there is big money involved!

Dundalk treble 10-1, 7-2 & 10-3 suggests a profitable winter.

Although opting out on last night's Wolverhampton card due to form lines being so tight it was difficult to see any outstanding opportunities. Dundalk again performed well. Winners Salvado's 10-3, Happy Anniversary 10-1, Caso Do Lago 7-2 were all top rated on my figures and I will be all out this week to prepare for the first subscribers selections on next Fridays card.

A big night tonight at Wolverhampton tonight as we see the first races benefitting from the Arena Leisure cash injection. A card which perhaps would get more focus had it been an afternoon card and has also left me questioning how well Wolverhampton fits in to the picture with the distances differences and the same question with Southwell with the different surface.

I was fearful that the card would not attract the level of entrance that the races merited but we have a truly competitive card. Outside of those races with subscribers selections the 6:45 looks a race of most interesting and I have whittled the runners down to old boy Lowther after its winning performance on its recent return to the surface versus AEGAEUS who is currently trading at 10's on the exchanges and must have sound claims of at least a place.

Good luck with your day

The mare was unsuited by the standard going!

There has been little to write to the blog over the past week with a trickle of selections, mostly winning selections, but today, I feel it will be therapeutic in exorcising the demons of being chewed up and spat out after yesterdays selections.

We started well with 1 point DARING DRAGON (opened 6-4) winning the first and we were already aware at this point 3 point selection JULLUNDAR was declared a non runner. Our next selection 2 points DUSTLAND FAIRYTALE (5-4) ran so poorly the trainers representative was called before the stewards and reported 'the mare was unsuited by the standard going' doffed his cap and walked out of the stewards room.

A story was also unfolding from the course regarding the heavily backed Bert Trick being withdrawn on invitation by the BHA. I am sure there will be more on this on the coming days.

FLEMISH SCHOOL was next up and finished 13 lengths clear of the rest of the field, withthe exception of one. Unrated Great Fighter didn't need to live up to its name and was so much the better that Luke Morris gave up the chase once passed.

Hopes for the day know rested heavily on 2 point selection OFF THE PULSE (opened 12-1) and I was very counting my money as it traveled around the outside and in to a challenging position as they turned for home. Once in the lead it appeared harder work than anticipated and although OFF THE PULSE maintained an advantage over its early adversary Lyric Peace, Soul Intent was closing from the wide outside and the post just didn't come soon enough for the selection and 24 points profit bit the dust with our second bridesmaid on the card.

Cayo Coco has been temporarily postponed!

Frustrated again by BURREN VIEW LADY, subscribers sole selection on Saturdays Wolverhampton card. Although running creditable last night, in its last three runs it has thwarted our attention.  When selected on 21st September it flashed home after traffic problems failing by 1/4 length to collar the winner. On the 3rd October it won beating our selection on the day Glastonberry. Last night, once again a selection and fails to hold on by 1/4 length!

On a night of weird and wonderful results I was hopeful that Cayo Coco was still on the cards after the run of BUSTER BROWN who finished 3rd after a poor passage but then the wheels really truly fell off with appalling runs from the remainder of my Canadian, best optimised by the run of Lieutenant Nelson in a race won by 18 race maiden Borough Boy.

I guess the future for Lieutenant Nelson is a little uncertain this morning and Cayo Coco has been temporarily postponed for me. I get to fight again another day but I am not sure that will be the case for Lieutenant Nelson.
