Like buses all our winners come along together

Well, that was so much better and like buses all our winners come along together. We may have started Saturday with a feeling of de ja vu as a horse I felt very bullish about, Sexy Secret (opened 5-1) finished 2nd in Lingfield Parks 12:20.

After being backed down to an SP of 2-1, Sexy Secret turned for home looking very much like the winner only to be worn down by the deposed favourite Steventon Star. Any anxiety for the day ahead becoming a post hitting day was soon eradicated as 3 point selection Suitsus (opened 4-5), Big Baz (opened 11-4) Intransigent (opened 7-2) and Battalion (opened 6-1) took the top prizes in the 12:50, 1:25, 2:00 and 2:35 respectively.

There were no sexy prices among our winners but I did feel like it added some respectability to what had been a trying week.

Even in defeat we were given glimmers of hope by our other selections as Dark Side Dream (8-1) and Dianora (11-4) both looked like they had slipped their fields only to be collared late on at Wolverhampton.

A quieter week lies ahead with only 9 meetings and we reconvene here at 2:10 on Monday in a race where Clive Cox Mikandy takes on Gay Kelleway New Abbey Dancer, with the former most likely to appreciate the step up in trip on breeding and add to the 3o% three winners from his last ten runners for Cox.

Biting Bullets stops biting nails

Today marks the end of a busy and so far fruitless week. When you are busy and winning, the impetus takes care of itself but when you seem to be continually hitting the post you do get a little punch-drunk. In among the all too infrequent winners we have amassed, in no particular order 2nd 11-4, 3rd 12-1, 2nd 13-2, 3rd 5-2, 2nd 2-1, 3rd 8-1, 2nd 5-2, 3rd 8-1, 2nd 5-1, 2nd 5-1 and 3rd 9-4.

When Wrood (opened 10-3) dead-heated in Lingfield Parks 1:30 my frustration was reaching boiling point. The late withdraw of 3 point selection Royal Trooper simply added to my feeling of misery!

Step up Biting Bullets (opened 13-2) in Wolverhampton’s 4:30. Not only did the win give a small profit on the day, the change in my demeanour was instant and the kids and wife could stop trembling in their shoes each time they spoke to me (joke).

After a prolonged winning period stretching back to the end of August bad periods are so much harder to take and as damaging as a bad couple of days is to how you approach the next day psychologically, you have to put bad days in to the perspective of winnings days versus losing days.

There is always the likelihood that today is the day that accounts for any small losses ;)

Southwell horses stopping like they have been shot!

As we constantly see the term ‘Standard’ being broadcast by Clerks of the Course for All Weather tracks you can be forgiven for assuming that the deviations in the going must be minimal. I can assure that this is far from the case.

As I had alluded to in yesterday’s post ‘Racking up top rated winners at Dundalk’  regarding my concerns on how the going at Southwells meeting may be detrimental to our selections, rain on this surface has the opposite affect to what you might suppose.

Although the surfaces are commonly referred to as ‘sand’ giving the expectation that wet sand will ride quicker than dry, this has never been the case at Southwell. Whereas the Polytrack surfaces at Lingfield Park and Kempton Park ride marginally quicker when wet, the Fibresand surface at Southwell follows the same attributes as turf in becoming slower when wet.

This often manifests itself in horses stopping like theyhave been shot in the final stages of races. Our selection Captain Dunne in Southwell’s 3:50 being a classic example.

In hindsight, looking at the more surprising winners Reach The Beach 25-1 and Best Tamayuz 25-1, it is not so surprising to see their best form coming on Soft \ Good to Soft ground on turf.

Racking up top rated winners at Dundalk

Someone forgot to read the script yesterday and I think it might have been me. With only three races of interest starting with the 6:20. With Secret Glance (opened 5-2) having poached a 5 length lead and Hills And Dales (opened 7-2) travelling strongly and likely to be the horse most likely to offer a challenge, a 1st and 2nd looked on the cards. Enter Royal Silk. Flying in the final furlong from back to front at 33-1 under Twiston-Davies to spoil the party.

With Star Of The Stage (8-1) only able to finish 3rd in the 6:50 and the withdraw of Grey Mirage in the 7:20 the day rested on Classic Mission (13-2) and McBirney (opened 4-1). The latter being backed like defeat was out of the question.

If the finishing time of the Charlie Hall Chase made us question the actual distance the race was run over. The last race at Kempton Park left me questioning whether they had run too far. The race was run in such a pedestrian pace in the opening stages, you would be forgiven for thinking that the field were cantering to the start. The end result being a battle up the straight between Cataria Girl and our selection Classic Mission with the former holding sway.

While we were hitting the bar continuously at Kempton Park, we were racking up top rated winners at Dundalk with Wychwood Warrior (3-1), Sirikoi (1-2), Whaileyy (9-4) and Minot Street (4-1) all scoring.

We have a busy two days ahead with 2 meetings today and 3 on Friday and although we are looking at what I perceive to be several good, nicely priced opportunities at Southwell today, I am little concerned over how the course will run with the change in the weather.

We are unlikely to get the same generous 25-1 next time out!

If ending Friday with a 20-1 winner and then having a cessation of All Weather fixtures until Monday afternoon left subscribers counting down the hours, the anticipation of waiting another All Weather free day after an unsatisfactory Monday is even greater.

Jim Crowley riding two of our earlier selections gave Oriental Splendour (opened 5-1) a mountain to climb in the opener. The selection finished fastest of all its rivals, but even the long straight at Kempton Park wasn't long enough to allow Oriental Splendour time to gather in Hugh Taylor's pick Anastazia.

Kung Hei Fat Choy, also ridden by Crowley was never put in to the race and wasn't even ridden out in the final furlong and a half. The assumption is that this was no more than a warm up for its return to Southwell in the near future where 3 of its 6 wins have been claimed. I would also expect that Jim Crowley will NOT be on board.

I checked and double checked the C&D rating for Nigel’s Destiny in the 4:20 only to find that it stood up to closer scrutiny. Loathed to act based upon one C&D run, I favoured Set The Trend who looked a tired horse in running and ready for a rest after 4 races in 18 days. As my C&D rating suggested, the time performance by Nigel’s Destiny was a cut above everything else on a card where the 7 other races all returned times hovering around standard. The proximity of Semeral to the winner makes for two horses for the notebook.

Although we suffered a loss in the 4:50 with our selection Golden Emerald (opened 25-1) who was beaten in to third by two un-rated horses: Mahsoob & Razor Wind.  The distance the three put between themselves and the remainder of the field is worthy of note if we see the first two home back on this surface over the winter. Golden Emerald unfortunately has been exposed by the run and although I see this horse as a winner in waiting, we are unlikely to get the same generous 25-1 next time out.

Our light at the end of the tunnel was Larghetto (opened 3-1) in the last. After knocking on the door over 6f at Wolverhampton LTO, Larghetto has now shown the versatility to win over 6f, 7f and 1 mile. All wins have been within the scope of 0-60, but the manner of this victory would suggest potential to win with the penalty preferably back up to a mile.
