A stark reminder of fickle horse racing can be yesterday
with a horse beaten 8 lengths by the 1-3 on favourite in the 12:50 reversing the
form and winning at 20-1. This was followed by an 8yo who had not won a race
since 2011 and never winning further than 8f winning the 1:25 over 9f. This was
then followed by another horse who had not won over the trip since Feb 2011 Chevise
taking the 2:00 at 20-1. Perhaps it is better to simple move on than dwell and analyse!
Today we have the joys of yet another Southwell card which
starts with a race that looks winnable for Pearl Noir who finally got off the
mark at its 20th attempt in its pen-ultimate run before reverting to
type LTO, but win or lose I wouldn’t back it over the straight 5f at Southwell.
Furthermore, I wouldn’t want to risk any money on such a race but if forced at
gun point I would take IMJIN RIVER.
In the 1:40 HANNAHS TURN and Greenhead High have put in good
performances over C&D with the former looking to have the edge. Kelly’s Eye
makes its debut on the surface and has sire stats equal to that of the
selection at generous EW odds.
There is little left of what was already a dismal looking
2:40 and in a field of 4 the pace will surely play a part. Preference would go
to EXCEEDING POWER rather than Captain Secret on attainment on the surface but
as the prices suggest this could go to any one of the four.
Yasir sets the standard in the finale at 3:40 and it would
be hard to see either Alborz or Painted Tail trouble it on past performances. Although
the breeding does little in confirming my claim AFRO strikes me as a Southwell
horse and the market move suggests I am not alone in this thinking.
Have a fun day and good luck
