THE well-bred Tomintoul Star finally broke her duck when justifying favouritism in the maiden handicap. The former Henry Cecil-trained filly, who is now trained by Ruth Carr for Michael Hill had been placed in four of her previous 11 races, but made it 12th-time lucky when coming late under James Sullivan to win by half a length.
"At last," said her trainer. "She's not done a great deal wrong, though. James gave her a good ride, getting her over from her high draw. She wasn't an expensive filly either as she cost only three grand and has paid her way."

It was also a red-letter evening for owner Jim Duggan, as he had his first winner when Zubova won the claimer. Ridden by William Carson, the filly raced prominently and gained the upper hand over a furlong out before running on strongly to score by a length and a half.

Winning trainer Rae Guest said: "Her owner claimed her out of Richard Hannon's yard with the aim of winning a race with her, as she's well-bred. She was placed plenty of times at two, so thehandicapper had her, thus we decided to try her in this company."

Championship leader Paul Hanagan, who had four rides, won on the last of them, City Stable, for trainer Michael Wigham in the 1m6f handicap.

Although the five-year-old travelled best and looked sure to win a long way from home, he had to be ridden out to hold the late run of Three Boars to give his rider a fourth success of the day following his quick-fire hat-trick at Pontefract.

"I'll sleep well tonight," said the winning rider.
