First 20-1 for Novembers New Subscribers (UPDATED)

After the dark events of the previous night at Wolverhampton we got off to a bright start with our first selection Spinning Cobblers (3-1) winning the Apprentice Handicap under a clever ride from Aaron Jones. Spinning Cobblers, a winner LTO over 7f was quick enough over 6f to stalk the pace under no duress and was kept tucked in behind the two front runners until the furlong pole where it was driven to split the two and repel the fast finish of Majestic Song. Kevin Stott was nowhere to be seen on favourite Dazeen!

It was disappointing to see such a tight market in the 6:10 for our selections but the win of selection Foxtrot Romeo (opened 13-2) was sufficient to make a small profit with another of our selections Pipers Note (opened 15-2)  finishing 2nd, Amadeus Wolfe Tone 4th and Go Far 5th. Only Confessional spoilt the party for a 1,2,3 and 4.

There are always setbacks in this game and we are about to go on the all to frequent roller coaster ride! No sooner had we recovered from the 2 point selection Last Minute Lisa (10-1) who huffed and puffed into a 6th place finish in the 7:10 before our final selection on the card Masterpaver (20-1) bolted up under a man at the top of his game Martin Harley.

Masterpaver raced alongside the short priced favourite and good friend of ours over past weeks, Daaree just off the pace. Travelling consummately well in to the straight, once the button was pressed by Harley the result became a fore gone conclusion. With nothing able to mount a worthy challenge in the final furlong our selection maintain a very healthy lead for a 20-1 shot and provide the first 20-1 for Novembers new subscribers.

As elated as I was with a 20-1 victory, seeing Daaree breakdown soured the occasion somewhat.

For someone who preaches the importance of discipline with regard to gambling, I have to admit to a little indiscipline last night. With a couple of races to go at Dundalk, a horse in the last race was jumping off the page! Top rated on my Speed Figures, A competitive OR far superior to its rivals, A C&D rating better than its LTO figure after 4 C&D runs and available at 6.2 15 minutes before the off on the machine.

Sometimes you see things that you have to take advantage off whether they are part of a methodical process or not. After all, I'm only human ;). Result: A pillar to post victory

Carnage on Wolverhampton's new Tapeta, 5 horses down with one fatality

Tragedy struck at Wolverhampton last night in the 7:10 when the prominent racing Fitz Flyer clipped heels turning for home, fatally fell and caused absolute carnage to those racing behind him. Pandar – Freddie Tylicki, Cape Of Hope – Richard Kingscote and Ortac Rock – Paul Hanagan where all brought down in the mayhem that ensued. Powerful Pierre – Toby Atkinson unseated rider in its attempt to avoid the mayhem.

Remarkably the jockey of Fitz Flyer Jordan Nason escaped without serious injury while his mount suffered fatal injuries. Paul Hanagan was taken to hospital with a suspected broken collar bone, Richard Kingscote sustained a broken collar bone, arm, wrist and elbow and punctured lung.

As sad as the loss of our selection Fitz Flyer was, watching the event live gave the expectation of a greater tragedy! Fitz Flyer could be seen in the early part of the race tossing his head from side to side behind the front runners. Jordan Nason was still attempting to reign the horse in as they turned for home and having watched enough racing to know when to get excited, I was fully anticipating glory for our selection. What followed left me and a boisterous but small crowd at Dunstall Park stunned in to silence.

Stott the nemesis, Kirby and Godolphin

Don’t tell the wife but I woke up this morning thinking about Kevin Stott! No not in that way ;) It was more a mental note to investigate how a little known jockey (to me at least) had risen to such prominence. A jockey obviously held in high esteem by Saeed bin Suroor and of late my nemesis!

Disappointed with his ride on Tayma a couple of days ago at Wolverhampton his name came to my attention twice last night. First on our selection Evening Rain and perhaps the writing was on the wall after Adam Kirby in the Godolphin (C. Appleby) white cap rode Fey (11-1) to victory in the 5:10, rode Victory Megastar (5-2) to victory in the 6:10: a race that Hanagan and Stott rode two Godolphin entries (both Saeed bin Suroor) and then Four Season (13-8) for Godolphin (C. Appelby) white cap to beat our selection.

The 7:10 saw Martin Harley at his best on our selection Grendisar (10-3) sat motionless at the back of the field until weaving through runners with nothing more than a shake of the reigns until hitting the front. Expectant of Martin Harley putting distance between him and his rivals as he went in to the drive, I was reminded that Grendisar is a horse that just does enough!

To our detriment, just doing enough in the 7:40 was Kevin Stott on Godolphin’s Musaddas as he repelled the late challenge of our final selection on the card: Khatiba (3-1) under Graham Lee. Khatiba was gobbling up the ground after sitting mid division throughout the trip and narrowly failed to get its head in front at the line. In such circumstances you usually question why the jockey hadn't taken a more prominent position or made an earlier effort. In the case of Khatiba it was noticeable that Graham Lee had to ride the selection along just to keep his position throughout the race.

We have some familiar names as selections tonight at Wolverhampton. In particular the 7:10 where I am warmed by the withdraw of Stonefields Flyer and fully expect our selection in the race to make amends.

A good day for George Baker and an equally good day for us

Less than a handful of selections for Tuesday across the two cards at Southwell and Kempton Park but we still managed to comfortably put the disappointment of Monday behind us. It wasn't the best of starts with our sole Southwell selection Cousin Khee (opened 15-8) being out battled by 6 times course winner Kingscombe in a head bobbing finish. Given the narrow margin of defeat, I feel that being ridden for a large part of the 2 mile trip, scraping the paint off the rail where the track rides notoriously deeper played a major part in Cousin Khee’s undoing.

Kempton Park started equally disappointingly with Highly Likely (opened 11-2) being highly unlikely, able only to show an extremely short burst of speed when asked for an effort taking it in to third before fading in to 5th behind Gracefilly in the 5:10.

On the 24^th October we had the good fortune to be on Innoko when winning at 11-1. On that occasion Innoko hit the front and just held on from the fast finishing Bridge That Gap over 9f. It was no less uncomfortable last night for Innoko (9-2) as we witnessed the reverse scenario with our 2 point selection running down the favourite McBirney and George Baker in the final strides over 11f.

Having deprived George Baker a treble with our success with Innoko in the 6:40, we were onside with our final selection on the Kempton Park card. Stonefield Flyer (opened 13-2) who could put the cherry on top for subscribers. Stonefield Flyer travelled ominously well into the straight where it was worked to the outside to deliver its challenge but appeared to be somewhat reluctant to go by the leader Another Try. It took all the urging and galvanising that George Baker could muster to drive Stonefield Flyer to a ¾ length victory. A good day for George Baker and an equally good day for us.

As we are back at Kempton Park this evening with interests in four of the eight races. Having had four of our top rated win from six races last night should hold us in good stead if the status quo is maintained. But this is racing and no two days are the same!

Sakhra Blu! Stitched up and Sewn Up

November started as October finished with selection Sewn Up (4-1) taking the 1:45 Dunstall Park opener. The margin of victory was slender but the drop back in trip after its LTO success over 7f gave confidents that it wouldn’t be lacking in the finish over 5f 216yds.

We had to shed some points before adding again with selection Twice Certain (2-1) and Luke Morris who was completing a double after an earlier win on Invincible Ridge in the 2:50. There was nothing flamboyant about Twice Certain’s win who simply ground down the opposition at what appeared to be an even pace throughout.

Having already seen a 50-1 winner in Avonmore Star in the 2:15, we witnessed a very tactically astute ride from Graham Gibbons on All Weather débutante Pivotman at 28-1 making all and muddling the pace, taking the 4:25, with the best of our selections Coillte Cailin (8-1) holding on grimly for third spot.

Coillte Cailin was to prove a highlight of the last three races as we watched Cerutty win an uncompetitive and un-eventful 4:55 at the handsome odds of 2-7.

One of our two selections Elegant Ophelia (6-1) ran no race for us at all in the finale and was all but pulled up, while our second selection Sakhra (25-1) I feel is one to keep an eye on. While the winner Royal Trooper was able to enjoy an un-interrupted passage around the outside of the field, Sakhra faced a wall of horses. Once switched and given daylight, finished its race closing on the leaders. A race well worth watching over. Unfortunately the result remains the same with each watch! 4th at 25-1. Sakhra Blu

It has been some time since we enjoyed the delights of Southwell’s artificial surface but today we see the start of their winter offering. What a miserable looking card we have start us off and I am somewhat relieved we have only the one interest there today.

Kempton Park looks equally uninviting with only 6 races but at least, within those 6 races we have some competitive prices to attract us. 

Me, I have a funeral to attend this afternoon so hope when I return I have results that will lift the spirits.

With the introduction of Chelmsford City (Great Leighs) this season and the likelihood of Newcastle and Catterick offering All Weather Horse Racing Imminent, we will soon see horse racing on an artificial surface increasing from its current position of 20% of the racing calendar.

A couple of days to count and recount our October winnings

Our final bow for October ended in good style with probably three of the most impressive and emphatic victories of the day. All of whom are likely to be of equal interest next time out if they are campaigned on the AWT in the coming months.

Selection Tayma (2-1) 4:25 Wolverhampton needed no more than hands and heels to take the opener providing yet another All Weather win for Saeed bin Suroor. Set The Trend was given far too much to do under George Downing who came from the back of the pack to close all the way to the line but finished out of the frame.

Selection Naoise (11-4) 4:55 Wolverhampton was pulling Jacob

Butterfields arms out of the sockets for most of the 1m 141yds trip. Naoise ranged alongside our second selection in the race Cherry Street (33-1) in the straight and although my pocket would have much preferred the latter to prevail, there was never a fleeting moment of thought that it would be the case as Naoise cruised by with Cherry Street booked for second. Pim Street, who just failed to land the money for us 3 days ago, once again finished well taking fourth after being tail-end Charlie turning for home.

2 points selection Billyoakes (7-1) 5:55 Wolverhampton came from last to first to win going away under Charles Bishop which came as no surprise. Unlike its SP as it appeared friendless in the market. The only moment of doubt came when Charles Bishop became torn between driving Billyoakes through rivals or to switch wide. Finally opting for the latter was a wise choice in the opinion of this armchair jockey ;)

We now have a couple of days to count and recount ourOctober winnings with gleeful faces before Monday afternoon’s meeting at Wolverhampton gets November under-way.
